The October NASHRM training is scheduled for Thursday, October 19, 2023. Training will be delivered using Zoom, an online audio and web conferencing platform. If you plan to attend, please register to receive an invite by emailing our programs director, Willow Bowen at bowenw@doyon.com, by Tuesday, October 17, 2023, and the link will be sent to you.
Our start time is 11:45 a.m. for sign-in, with the program running from 12:00-1:00 p.m. This presentation has been approved for SHRM credits.
Session Description: Empathy is a critical leadership skill. It helps build and sustain positive workplace relationships, foster diversity, and inclusion, encourage cooperation and collaboration and facilitate conflict management. Empathy makes it possible to work cooperatively with people who have very different experiences, preferences, styles, and opinions. With millions of job openings nationwide, employers are working around the clock to identify, recruit and train new talent while also striving to engage their current workforce. Empathy seems to be the key to success.
Session Objective(s):
- Review data that shows the impact of empathy within the workplace
- Examine how to build a business case for intentionally implementing empathy within the workplace
- Determine how to cultivate empathy within the workplace

Presenter Bio: Monique Akanbi, SHRM-CP, is a SHRM Field Services Director with over 15 years of broad-based experience in senior leadership and all aspects of HR in both, the public and private sectors. As a strategic change agent, Monique is credited with decreasing employee turnover, increasing employee engagement & satisfaction, and improving organizational culture. Monique is also a Master Examiner and Mentor with the Sterling Council Board of Examiners, visiting organizations throughout Florida and Georgia across all industries to assess their leadership system and organizational performance through the National Malcolm Baldrige Performance Excellence model.
Prior to joining SHRM as a staff member, Monique was an active SHRM volunteer leader serving in various roles including Chapter President and District Director with HR Florida. In addition, she serves on various local non-profit boards. As a high energy, creative thinker, team builder, and problem-solver, Monique has a passion for service and assisting others in their purpose, potential, and professional development through meaningful connections.
